Diabetes and Hypertension Screening and Awareness Programme Led by NAYLs
The Diabetes and Hypertension Screening and Awareness Programme is a community-based initiative led by HCAN’s NCD Awareness Youth Leaders (NAYLs). The programme aims to improve public understanding of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and associated cardiovascular and kidney-disease risks while promoting early identification, healthy lifestyle practices, and timely referral.
HCAN conducted approximately 20 community screening and awareness campaigns across Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Bhairahawa, Janakpur, and Nepalgunj, reaching around 2,700 people.
During the campaigns, trained youth leaders worked alongside healthcare professionals to provide:
- Blood-pressure measurement
- Blood-glucose testing
- Basic NCD risk assessment
- Healthy-lifestyle counselling
- Public-health education
- Referral guidance for participants with abnormal findings
Participants received practical information on healthy eating, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing salt and sugar intake, avoiding tobacco, limiting harmful alcohol use, managing stress, and attending regular health checks.
Individuals with elevated blood pressure, abnormal blood-glucose results, or other significant risk factors were counselled and advised to seek further assessment at an appropriate healthcare facility. The programme emphasized that community screening supports early risk identification but does not replace clinical diagnosis by a qualified healthcare professional.
The initiative also strengthened youth leadership by equipping NAYLs with practical skills in community mobilization, health communication, screening support, ethical engagement, counselling, referral guidance, and non-communicable disease prevention.
By involving young people as community health advocates, the programme extended prevention messages to families, schools, workplaces, and underserved communities while strengthening local participation in diabetes and hypertension prevention.
