8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity
The 8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity project was implemented by HCAN with support from the World Obesity Federation and in collaboration with Nagarjun Municipality. It aimed to prevent obesity and related non-communicable diseases through early screening, nutrition education, physical-activity promotion, youth leadership, digital advocacy, and community engagement.
The project conducted community screening across Wards 3, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of Nagarjun Municipality. Participants received BMI assessment, blood-pressure measurement, blood-glucose testing, oxygen-saturation assessment, medical counselling, and guidance on healthy lifestyle practices. A total of 367 community members participated in the screening activities.
School health programmes were implemented in six schools, reaching 602 students with education on balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, obesity prevention, healthy food choices, and healthier school canteens. School-linked screening activities also assessed 257 participants for obesity and associated NCD risks.
The project trained ten NCD Awareness Youth Leaders in BMI measurement, blood-pressure and glucose screening, food labelling, DASH dietary principles, counselling, referral, and community health promotion. It also included a digital campaign involving 12 participants and reaching approximately 54,500 views, two expert podcast episodes, and a technical consultation workshop to strengthen obesity-related IEC materials.
Through integrated screening, school engagement, youth capacity-building, digital communication, and technical consultation, the project promoted early risk identification, healthier behaviour, reduced obesity stigma, and stronger community participation in obesity prevention.
